PATIENCE
Dear God of All
People,
Give me the patience
of Job, who endured one wretched affliction after another
and another without complaint.
Jesus, please give me a scintilla
of the patience You, Yourself, displayed
when You, the King of All Creation,
were mocked and lashed and scorned.
You remained stoic and silent.
"All will
come to those who wait,"
we are told. Help me to know when to act,
when to speak, and when to wait in silence.
Help me to bear
discomfort, disillusionment,
and the challenging moods of others with calm equanimity.
Help me to hold
my tongue when I am tempted
to lash out without thinking, or to respond
to a provocation which I should simply take
in stride.
Let me realize
that there is another day,
another opportunity to be better than I am,
to understand others, and to achieve,
with patience.
All this I pray
in hope and trust and love,
Amen
