Ragtime - Opening Number - The tepid Ken-Cen Revival - 2010 - First of 16 Videos

Comment: This revival did not succeed on Broadway, because the sense of the richly opulent era was, in my view, insufficiently realized. the Knnedy Center chose novice Director Marcia Milgrom to create the show as her first major effort. She explained: "We are approaching this from a production standpoint in a much more impressionistic way. There are no literal depictions of anything. So the car is not an authentic reproduction of a Model T. It's made out of scaffolding, and it's suggestive." This degree of abstraction removed the atmosphere of colorful nostalgia: Houdini's trunk trick, patriotic bunting, the colorful details and masks used originally with The Girl in the Swing. Garth Drabinskhy's production had semi-abstract skeletal settings, but richly detailed and colorful costumes and properties -- including the Model T Ford. The show received rave reviews, Helen Hayes Awards and Tony Awards, but the public was not buying. The production closed after three months.Moral: Don't Try to Improve on Success....
