ASPIRATIONS
Jesus,
Mary, Joseph
Lord
have mercy!
Blessed be God!
Jesus!
An
aspiration is a short prayer, sometimes
only
a single word, spoken in a single breath,
meant to be repeated silently throughout
the day, to remind us often of God, and
to "keep God
reminded" of us.
Aspirations are like a soft pattering
rain, which, rather than falling
to the ground, rises upward to heaven.
In
saying aspirations, we obey
Saint Paul's injunction
to "Pray
without ceasing,"
turning our thoughts heavenward often,
however briefly.
Very early on, Christians came to understand
that the Holy Name of Jesus alone had great
power, and the recitation of His Name was
itself
a form of prayer.
St. Paul wrote in Philippians 2,
"At the name of Jesus every knee should
bow."
(As children, we were taught to bow our
heads whenever saying the name of Jesus.
Once, in church, I was repeating the Holy
Name over and over
and nodding each time. Amusingly, (in retrospect),
a nun sitting behind me scolded me for bobbing
my head up and down during Mass DBM)
