MARTIN
LUTHER
Dear God of All
People,
Martin Luther was
a fiery reformer whose rhetoric was often scalding.
He wrote that "So
thoroughly hopeless, mean, poisonous, and bedeviled a thing
are the Jews that for 1400 years they have been
and continue to be, our plague, pestilence, and all that
is our misfortune."
He suggested that the only way to baptize Jews was by tying
millstones around their necks.
Please, Creator
of All Mankind, forgive Luther for his intemperate outburst,
which reflects the fierce and ugly intolerance of the age
in which he wrote.
Let us both respect
and revere Your Chosen People, who have played a role of
great honor in the history of faith.
May all Jews be
respected and revered.
Amen
